Sixteen Rivers is proud to announce that Mark Doty, winner of the National Book Award for Poetry in 2008, will be the featured reader at this year's benefit. The benefit will be held on November 6 in Ross. Tom Killion, whose art graces the cover of The Place That Inhabits Us, will be a guest of honor as well. Sixteen Rivers Press Chapbook Competition

Sixteen Rivers Press is excited to announce a chapbook competition for poets under 40, to be published in spring 2012. Submissions will be accepted between August 15 and December 15. The winner will receive $1000 prize and 25 copies of the chapbook. The winner will not be required to become a member of the collective, though he or she must commit to giving three to four readings in the greater Bay Area to support the chapbook. The final judge for the manuscripts will be Forrest Hamer.

* Send TWO copies of your manuscript.
* The manuscript must be postmarked no later than December 15, 2010. Authors must be under 40 on that date.
* The manuscript must be between 26 to 30 pages in length, 1 1/2-spaced lines.
* Manuscripts must be paginated.
* Include two title pages, one with full contact information, and one with the title only.
* Do not include your name anywhere in the manuscript, as it is important to us that these be blind submissions.
* Include an acknowledgments page listing previous publications of the poems.
* Include a table of contents page.
* Clip your manuscript using a butterfly clip. Don't use folders or any type of binding.
* Include a $15 reading fee, payable to Sixteen Rivers Press.
* Include an SASE for contest results.
* Send your manuscript to Sixteen Rivers Press, P.O. Box 640663, San Francisco, CA
94161-0663.
* Manuscripts cannot be returned. If you would like verification of receipt, please clip a stamped, self-addressed postcard to one copy of the manuscript.

Christina Hutchins is the 2010 winner of the Fitch Prize of the National Poetry Review for a single poem, "Tintinnabulations Above the Bay." Christina also received a Special Mention for a new manuscript in the Tupelo Press' Dorset Prize, chosen by judge Jane Hirshfield.

Congratulations to Christina Hutchins who was awarded the Jeffrey E. Smith Poetry Prize from The Missouri Review. She was awarded $5000.00 for her poems, and will attend a reception and reading on March 20 at 6:30 at the Country Club of Missouri in Columbia, MO. Beyond the Rivers

Sixteen Rivers Press is thrilled to celebrate with Gerald Fleming as he awaits the publication of his next book of poetry. Night of Pure Breathing, a book of prose poems, will be published by Hanging Loose Press in spring of 2011. Congratulations, Gerald!

And here's a photo from last October when Gerald attended the inaugural reading for Kay Ryan's second term as the United States Poet Laurete. The evening reading was held in the Library of Congress and was followed by a reception under the magnificent rotunda dome. The following day, when this photo was taken, Kay held a small reception up in the Poetry Room of the Library of Congress. How wonderful to know that a Poetry Room exists high up in the rotunda, and how lovely to know that Kay Ryan is again our Poet Laureate.

Congratulations to Lynne Knight (Again, 2009) for being awarded 2nd Prize in the 2009 New England Shakespeare Festival Sonnet Contest. The sonnet will be published in early summer of 2010 in the Raintree Review, as well as read and recorded by a Shakespearan actor. A Great Summer

This has been a great summer for Sixteen Rivers authors.

Carolyn Miller had two poems selected for the Writer's Almanac on Public Radio International, one read on July 5 and one on July 6. Both poems are from her new book, Light, Moving, published earlier this year.

Margaret Kaufman's poem "Photo, Brownie Troop, St. Louis, 1949" was chosen by Ted Kooser to appear the week of July 13 on American Life in Poetry. It will also appear in her collection, Inheritance, to be published by Sixteen Rivers in 2010.

We are also pleased to announce that Margaret Kaufman (Snake at the Wrist, 2002) has won second prize in the Katherine Ann Porter Prize for Fiction from the 2009 Nimrod Literary Awards for her short story, “Life Saving Lessons.”

Sixteen River 2008 Benefit

Sixteen Rivers is pleased to announce that United States poet laureate Kay Ryan will read at our annual fundraiser on Saturday, October 11, 2008. Ryan's sixth collection of poetry, The Niagara River, was published in 2005 and awarded the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize from the Poetry Foundation; she was named the sixteenth U. S. poet laureate in July 2008. We are pleased to have her read her highly original work for us at this event. A Meeting of Poetic Minds

Sixteen Rivers poet Gerald Fleming talks with former U.S. Poet Laureate Ted Kooser at the Idyllwild Poetry Conference this past July. Kooser, who edits the column "American Life in Poetry" for the National Poetry Foundation is a fan of Fleming's 2005 book, Swimmer Climbing Onto Shore. Two Sixteen Rivers authors were recently awarded prizes in the annual poetry contest sponsored by the Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Foundation. Congratulations to Nina Lindsay, author of Today's Special Dish, who was awarded $1000 and to Gillian Wegener, author of The Opposite of Clairvoyance, who was awarded $7500. AWP Conference

A good time was had by all at the AWP Conference held in New York City from January 31 to February 2. We went to readings, lectures, panels, and tributes for a wide variety of poets and on a wide variety of topics. Dan Bellm, author of Practice, participated in an excellent reading at the 92nd Street Y, and all members of the press took turns manning the Sixteen Rivers table at the vibrant and exciting book fair. Now we are looking forward to next year's conference to be held in February in Chicago. Sixteen Rivers Press is happy to announce the addition of Lynne Knight to our membership. Lynne teaches writing at Contra Costa College and Solano College. Her full-length books of poetry are Dissolving Borders, which won a Quarterly Review of Literature prize (1996); The Book of Common Betrayals, which won the Dorothy Brunsman Award from Bear Star Press (2002); and Night in the Shape of a Mirror (David Robert Books, 2006). She has also had several chapbooks published and her poems have appeared in a wide number of journals and anthologies. On Saturday, November 3, 2007, we had a wonderful turnout for our Sixteen Rivers Press Benefit Reading with special guests Brenda Hillman & Robert Hass.
